Olympus MIC-D / Specs
Summary: We saw this at
Comdex a few weeks ago, and were blown away by the superb images and wide range
of imaging modes. With it's own bright white LED light source and automatic
exposure adjustment it's a snap to use. Even though it provides only VGA
resolution, it provides magnifications from
21x to 270x
and opens a digital window into the fascinating world of the small, and thanks
to its USB connectivity, it's a world you can share with everyone. The product
website has a number of lessons that carefully work you through more different
types of microscopy than I knew existed, all arranged in easy to follow
directions. Though pricey for the home, it's just-under-a grand price tag,
sturdy construction, and the ability for everyone to gather around the onscreen
image make it perfect for the classroom.
When I was growing up, I had a 100x
microscope and loved exploring the tiny worlds inside drops of lake water, and
anything else I could fit under the lens. It frustrated me that I had no idea
what I was looking at, and no way to show anyone. I would love to see Olympus
host a site where people could share images and answer questions about what they
are seeing. The MIC-D is a totally cool tool for the digital school, and I envy
the kids who get to try them out. |
