Reviewer: Ernest Lilley Date: 02/24/03 Rating: MSRP $24.95 / Amazon Price: $24.95 Product Website / Manufacturer Website / Specs Summary: Remember crockpots? Actually, they're alive and well in kitchens across the US, but they've always seemed to lack two things to qualify as really useful cook-tech. 1) all you can do is slow-cook stuff. 2) you can't immerse them. Now, most every recipe I know starts out with browning, or sautéing, or some high heat activity...then simmering. The Options multi-cooker has that down, with a non-stick coating inside and out, 6 qt. capacity, and tempered glass lid. It's even got a ZIF (zero insertion force) magnetic latch on its power plug so you can unplug it without scalding yourself. Also, it's immersible (with the heat control unplugged) and the non-stick surface makes it easy to clean. High Tech? Well, it doesn't have a microprocessor, but the non-stick may count. Either way, it's the right level of technology to do a job, and it's a great tool for the tech cook. Yes, you can even deep fry in it...but you can tell your girlfriend you use it to steam vegetables, because the truth is, there's not much you can't cook in it. If the $24.95 price tag embarrasses you, tell everyone you spent $149.99 at Williams Sonoma and they'll respect you again. |
