Summary: I can't help myself.
I keep dropping it. Not that its textured and scuff resistant case is hard to
hang onto, because it's not.
I just love the look on people's faces when they see
the sleek, svelte, 2.2lb sub-notebook tumble from my hand. Their horror is
mirrored by my amusement, because I know about the shock-dampened
10.4-inch XGA TFT active-matrix, anti-glare coated, thin-glass low-power,
high-output LCD, the polymer shock damper and flexible printed circuit
interface for the 40 GB hard drive and the lightweight
impact-resistant, dimpled-magnesium-alloy clamshell encasement. I worry more
about the floor.
The unit I got has Windows 2000 on it, but
production models will ship with XP. Mine runs fine though, and the Ultra Low
Voltage Mobile Intel® Pentium® III Processor-M 866MHz 512KB on-die L2 cache
processor zips through MS office applications. The battery life is more than
adequate for those coast to coast flights and even though it probably wasn't
their first priority, the sound quality is pretty good from the single speaker
(or via the stereo jack). The keyboard isn't full sized, but even my
big-guy-fingers adjusted to it quickly. As an executive or consultant, I'd be
more than happy to take this along...and as an IS manager, I'd sleep easier
knowing they had it.
Panasonic did tell me not to run this one over. "We've
done that with the CF-28, and it did fine when we ran a Humvee over it" they
said when they showed me the T1. This one is pretty tough, but it's not designed
for those loads. It doesn't say Toughbook on the outside, and I guess that's
just as well, since the environment it's meant for is more the airline tray
table and board room than tanks, but under its sexy skin...it's still a Toughbook,
heck, I bet it would take a bullet for the president, even if he only ran a
Fortune 500, not a country.
