H&M Software sent me a copy of StudioLine Photo 2 after I saw it demonstrated at the Photographic Marketing Association show in Vegas this January. Though I liked it's looks at the show, I confess that it's been languishing in my receiving pile while I worked on other things. After all, it's just another basic photo editing and presentation package. That's what I thought until I needed to put together a photo gallery for an event I covered and found that Photo 2 is a really useful application and well worth your consideration.

First off, it protects your images by using the original files only as a source, not the output. As they promise, no matter what you do, there is always a way back to the way the image was, even after you've saved your modified files. Also, you have the option of letting the program create source duplicates or not, depending on how many pictures and how much disk space you have. Keeping track of your images, and allowing you to annotate them extensively is where this package really shines. You can do quite a bit of editing on your pictures, including redeye, exposure and color correction, and pretty much everything you could ask for. I was impressed by the black and white conversion, which corrects for differences in brightness (e.g., yellow tones will appear brighter than blue tones) which is critical for good output and shows that they've put some thought into things.

Storing and editing are all well and good, but you probably didn't take those pictures to have them sit around on a hard drive. Photo 2 gives you a wealth of output options. You can email pictures easily, burn them to CDs and DVDs or create websites from a range of templates. You can even print them out, using a variety of photo layouts.

It's not Photoshop. There are lots of editing tools advanced users wouldn't be able to live without, but then again Photoshop doesn't have anything like the organizing capability that Photo 2 provides and you can link external programs as well. Advanced photographers might not find it the perfect application, but one they can recommend to others.
